That morning, after he discovered the tiger, Rob went and stood under the Kentucky Star Motel sign and waited for the school bus just like it was any other day.
Stunning opening sentence from another recommendation by Nat, Kate DiCamillo’s The Tiger Rising. She’s probably best known for Because of Winn-Dixie, but I’m more a fan of The Tale of Desperaux, which has one of those perfect lines in the perfect place that became the first bit of writing Nat liked to recite from memory, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, which feels like you’re working magic every time you turn a page. I learned more about Kate DiCamillo by reading her essay about writing than I did from all of her biographical material.

  • Thanks for the recommendation. I purchased Tiger Rising for my 8 yr. old daughter and she loved it. I, too, enjoyed reading it with her before bedtime.
